He was the WBCA District 7 Coach of the Year in 1991 and the NJCAA Region 18 Coach of the Year three times. Additionally, Perkins was a four-time conference coach of the year at Utah Valley State.

Perkins was inducted into the Utah Valley University Hall of Fame in 2000 and into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation Coaches Hall of Honor in 2010.

In 1995 he retired from coaching at UVSC to coach his own children. He was a tenured professor at Utah Valley from 1983-2010 teaching physical education/exercise science. Additionally, from 1986-89 and again from 2002-08, Perkins served as a department chair in the physical education/exercise science program.

He holds a Doctorate of Education from Brigham Young University that was obtained in 1989.
